Discussion Sparks Growth

Preparing for our debate on Oedipus Rex was one of the most fulfilling parts of my week. Going into the debate, I was prepared for our group to dominate the conversation and overpower the debate but to my delight, we were met with intelligent counterarguments and insightful rebuttals. Although I was upset to see that we lost, I was very happy to be a part of such a deep and analytical conversation.

After being part of such a resonating debate I wanted to do my research on how others felt about debate and what I could personally do to make myself a more efficient debate. A quote I found during my research was one that states: "Don't raise your voice, improve your argument". Although we didn't run into this problem in class, I think the premise is one that everyone should take away.

Especially when debating philosophical ideas like the ideas of victimization as a result o fate, it is important to bolster your claims and arguments with incontrovertible proof. It doesn't matter how loudly or fast you speak, rather the quality of your argument should be prioritized. I can't wait to use the new lessons I learned in class and in my further research to help me with debates in the future.

One interesting thing I found, is also the flexibility of quotes and the factor that perspective plays on it. In our debate, I found that both groups referenced the exact same quotes and terms at times yet we argued two vastly different points. It really sheds light on the beauty of perspective and how you can never understand the full extent of something until you view it through all scopes.

Thanks for a beautifully executed debate and thanks again for reading. I hope you enjoyed Storytime with Sejal!
