16 Personalities Test: Oedipus Rex

Reflecting on two aspects of our learning last week, we began our reading of Oedipus Rex and we also started the analysis of complex characters. I thought it was so interesting to hear about my classmates and hear them share about themselves. Each person got to discuss things that many people know about them and then reveal traits about them that others may not know. The beauty in this activity is that many people think that complex characters can only be found in novels and plays but in reality, there are complex characters all around us.

This quote by Jehane Noujaim really resonates with me because it revolves around the central idea that the most interesting characters, in stories and real life, always seem to have complex and dynamic personalities. After reading the pages in Oedipus Rex, I was curious to find out what personality he fits under using the Myers Briggs 16 Personalities Test.

After researching the different personalities and comparing it with Oedipus'prevelant Dionysian Impulse, I came to the conclusion that he is a Debater (ENTP). In our writer's entry, we learned that Oedipus was passionate, chaotic, irrational, and viewed himself as a superior being to his people. For these reasons, his personality aligns with the traits of a Debater. (Read more about Debaters).

Some of the Strengths and Weaknesses of a Debater are as follows: Knowledgeable, Quick Thinkers, Charismatic, Energetic, Argumentative, Intolerant, etc. I simply love the Myers Briggs Personality Test because it takes a few traits of a character and provides a closer analysis of their values, faults, and even their relationships. I am very excited to see the journey Oedipus undergoes and I am curious to see if my analysis of his personality remains accurate. Thanks for reading and I hope you enjoyed Storytime with Sejal!

P.S. This is the Personality Test I used (It is a really fun test to take if you are curious to learn about what Personality Type you have!!)

  1. Hey Sejal, I loved this post! I thought it was really cool how you tried to understand Odeipus's personality by using the Myer Briggs's 16 Personality test! It's like a whole new way of learning about a character for me - I've never done this before, so I'd love to try it. This method gives you another window to explore more about him than the narrator tells us, and brings out this more modern aspect to him that we can relate with! Wow, can't wait to read more blog posts from you!!
